Frequently Asked Questions ?

Here I have provided the answers to some questions that have been asked, and hope that they will help you understand what the site is all about, and enable you to get the most out of it. Of course, if you have any questions of your own , then mail@esvc.freeserve.co.uk is the place to ask them.

Q Are you completely insane ?
A Well - not entirely. But (never start a sentence with "But") to have embarked on a venture of this magnitude, there must be an element of truth in it.

Q What gave you the idea for this site ?
A It just sort of ... evolved. I was interested in learning about new web technologies, form-processing etc, and I thought it would be interesting to use it so that people could keep in touch. It's already been partially successful in that, despite appearances, I've learnt a great deal about creating web pages, having progressed from beginner to novice in only 6 years.

Q Is the Community run in conjunction with the School ?
A No - the Community is completely separate from the School, although we are very pleased that they have allowed us access to the vast array of historic photos.

Q Why do you keep on about O-level year ?
A It's a nice easy simple way of categorising people. Whether you left straight after taking GCE O-level or GCSE, or went on to do A-levels, your 'O-level year' is sufficient to place you in the correct school year. And (never start a sentence with "And") it also applies to those who joined 6th Form having taken O-levels at some other establishment.

Q Who can participate in the Community ?
A Anyone with an interest in the School. The initial concept started out as a point of contact for my school year (O-levels in 1966), and gradually expanded in scope until it has now reached anyone who has had anything to do with the school since it opened. So, all ex-pupils and staff are invited to join in.

Q I don't seem to recognise many names on the contacts list. How can I help to increase the numbers who have responded ?
A Use the Recommend A Friend form to send an automatically-generated email to everyone with whom you have kept in touch, and get them to do the same. To see what it says, send one to yourself first - nobody will ever know! You could also drop our name into any conversation or communication with any other ex-Ecclesfeldian you meet.

Q I don't have time to keep returning to the site - how can I keep in touch?
A Simply send a blank email and we will deliver our Newsletter from time to time, direct to your inbox.

Q I would like to take part, but I don't have an internet connection of my own.
A Ask a friend if you can use their connection so that you can submit your details to the Contacts List . You may like to include your telephone number as a means of contact. When you submit your details, the form checks to see if you have entered an email address; if you don't have one, then there are loads of FREE web-based email account that you can access from any web browser.

Q How can I help the site to develop ?
A Firstly, ensure that you submit your details to the Contacts List . Then, send in any news items, announcements, photos, anecdotes, reminiscences, articles, or anything of interest. The email address for submissions is mail@esvc.freeserve.co.uk .

Q How do I submit my details ?
A Simply click on 'Add My Details' on the nav-panel at the left, add your details to the form, and submit it. Once you've replied to the confirmatory email that you'll be sent, your details should appear on the Contacts List .

Q I have changed my email address (or other information) since I submitted my details. How can I change my listing ?
A Simply find your details on the contact list, and click on Edit next to your entry. Enter your username and password and change your details in the form. Simple as that, really.

Q How do I take part in the discussion forum mailing list ?
A Simply go to 'Join Discussion Forum' and subscribe to the ecclesfield-grammar mailing list at the Yahoo Groups site. Alternatively send a blank email to this address.
Either way, you'll then be able to send and receive messages to/from all other subscribers.

To post a message, simply send an email to ecclesfield-grammar@yahoogroups.com ; your message will then be automatically forwarded to all other subscribers. Past messages may be viewed by visiting The Archive.

Q I get lots of messages, but few seem relevant to my interests and school year.
A If there is sufficient demand, then it may be an idea to spawn special interest groups, each with their own mailing list. These could be publicised on the website and announced via the main mailing list.

Q I am organising a reunion, and would like to reach as many people as possible in my school year. How can you help ?
A Email us the details of your function, and we will publish them on the 'Reunion News' page. If you have subscribed to the mailing list, then you can post a message there.

Q I have already started a website for my own school year.
A Great! Just send us the url and we will link to it - and don't forget to link back to us!

Q How is the site best viewed ?
A Rather than suggest browser settings that users need to apply, I have designed the site so that it can take advantage of whatever settings you have. Initially, I started designing so that the whole page would be visible at 640X480, but found this too restrictive. In the end, I settled on 800X600, which wouldn't get completely lost at higher resolutions, and 640X480 users should be able to scroll horizontally to view the entire width of the text. The site makes use of JavaScript quite extensively, so enable it if you can. Otherwise, there are different versions of forms to which non-JavaScript users are directed. I have also tried to minimise download times, by re-using graphics where possible.

Q What gave you the idea for the colour scheme ?
A The school uniform that we used to wear in the 1960's. Maroon blazer with bottle green patch pocket and Ecclesfield Church embroidered in gold, and the girls' bottle green pleated skirts. At one time I was using a plain white background, and the pages looked really boring. Then in a flash of inspiration, I remembered the green and white checks of the girls' summer dresses - Pure Genius or what?
